The Secret of the Living Room Fort: Haiming & Mickey's Holiday Quest begins with a pile of blankets, a few couch cushions, and that familiar sparkle in a child's eye when someone whispers, "Let's build a fort." In this cozy indoor adventure, Haiming and his trusty dog, Mickey, transform a regular living room into a secret hideout filled with twinkling lights, shadowy hallways, and a mysterious holiday mission waiting to be solved.
I created this story with chilly afternoons and winter evenings in mind, when everyone is inside together and you want something that feels festive without being overwhelming. As the fort takes shape, so does the quest: Haiming and Mickey must follow playful clues, crawl through blanket tunnels, and imagine their way to a hidden holiday surprise. Along the way, simple moments-passing a pillow, turning on a lamp, sharing a snack-become chances to practice kindness, teamwork, and problem-solving.
The language is gentle and rhythmic, perfect for reading aloud with a mug of cocoa nearby. Young children will recognize their own world on every page: the hum of the heater, the glow of a string of lights, the thrill of shutting the fort flap and whispering, "No grown-ups allowed," even as they snuggle closer to the grown-up reading beside them.
This is the second book in my Haiming & Mickey adventure series and is especially lovely as a holiday-season read or gift. You can pair it with an afternoon of real fort building, using the story as a guide for creating your own "holiday quest" at home. By the end, the message is simple and warm: the best kind of adventure is the one you share, right in the middle of your own living room.
